The idea
What it's about
Thorkas is developing an advanced mini-computer that can be seamlessly integrated into the irrigation systems of nurseries, tree nurseries and farms. This enables even the most outdated systems to be controlled via smartphones and sensors. Agriculture is responsible for the consumption of 70% of the world's fresh water, with inefficient irrigation systems contributing significantly to this high consumption according to the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature). Given the high cost of new irrigation systems, many farms remain with their old and inefficient systems. Thorkas offers a solution by using sensor-based retrofitting to enable cost-effective modernisation of old systems, making them both up-to-date and water-efficient.
The team
Who is behind it
The team consists of the two founders Thormin Stiegler and Lukas Friedrichs. Thormin holds a Master's degree in digital media management and a Bachelor's degree in business informatics with several years of experience as a software developer. Lukas is a master precision mechanic and has looked after many irrigation-related customers over the years. He therefore knows the industry inside out.
