The idea
What it's about
In 2021, the hype surrounding insects as food began with the official EU approval of the Novel Food Directive. Numerous products appeared on the market, from insect burgers and protein powder to pasta and biscuits. The promise: Insect protein has an excellent amino acid profile and a very low footprint. We also started with protein noodles, which were very well received by our customers. The problem was the purchase price of insect flour, which was unnecessarily expensive due to manual processes and therefore not sustainable as a business idea. As resourceful engineers, we then set up our own farm and developed machines and factory concepts for more efficient production.
A lot has changed in the insect market since the company was founded in 2022. Many of the food start-ups no longer exist, others lead a niche existence. Animal feed and the black soldier fly became the centre of attention.
In the meantime, we have said goodbye to insect breeding. The hype surrounding insects has levelled off and the promising forecasts for market development have not been fulfilled. Increasing energy costs in Europe and especially in Germany are putting further pressure on the profitability of fully automated and capital-intensive production of insects.
Lower Impact GmbH is focussing on new projects under a new brand.
The team
Who is behind it
Thorsten is an industrial engineer and has been working in IT consulting for many years. He is responsible for organisational development, marketing and sales. Vincent is also an industrial engineer, focussing on technical development. They both share an interest in sport, nutrition, technology and continuous optimisation.
